Introducing the Social, Environmental and Economic Knowledge model (SEEk)using fuzzy sets to benchmark responsible management

Abstract

The first part of this work identifies current trends in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR), and analyze the effectiveness of the widely used Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) for producing non-financial information, through an empirical study of the Spanish energy sector. The second part presents a model, the Social, Economic and Environmental Knowledge (SEEk) model, which is the main contribution of this doctoral thesis, which uses the mathematics of fuzzy sets to measure and benchmark the overall impact of responsible and sustainable management. The results show that there is a significant gap in the use and verification of non-financial information presented through the GRI framework. The application of the proposed model demonstartes its ability to measure the net impact in social and environmental terms for any organization, doing so as a function of its economic results, thereby offering a truly comprehensive analysis of its responsible and sustainable management. The model is designed in a way that permits its use in organizations with different characteristics, offering the ability to compare and benchmark results, thereby facilitating business decision-making and providing overall more balanced results. La primera parte de este trabajo identifica las tendencias actuales en el campo de la responsabilidad social coroporativa (RSE) y analiza la eficacia del marco Global Reporting Innitiative (GRI) como herramienta básica para la producción de información no financiera, a través de la realización de un estudio empírico en el sector energético español. La segunda parte propone un nuevo modelo, el modelo Social, Economic and Environmental Knowledge (SEEk), basado en la matemática de los conjuntos borrosos para medir y comparar el impacto total de la administración responsable y sostenible. Los resultados demuestran que existe un importante vacío en el uso y en la verificación de la información no financiera basada en el marco GRI de referencia. Así pues, la aplicación del modelo SEEk permite medir el impacto neto en terminos sociales y medioambientales como una funcion de su resultados economicos, y ofrece una verdadera visión integral de la administración responsable y sostenible de las organizaciones. El modelo propuesto se ha diseñado de forma tal que permite ser aplicado en distintos sectores económicos o sobre organizaciones con características diversas, con el fin de analizar y comparar los resultados, permitiendo con ello facilitar la toma de decisiones empresariales y la consecución de resultados globales más equilibrados.
