Abstract

This work shows the teaching experience carried out for the implementation of freehand graphic tools in a Problem Based Learning design subject taught to undergraduate engineering students. Freehand drawing is here treated as a problem solving and ideation tool. The approach adopted is therefore methodological rather than simply developing drawing skills. Students was taught how to apply sketches for idea exploration, as well as mind maps, Visual Thinking techniques and visual functional analysis to develop the preliminary design of a micro remotely piloted aircraft (mRPA). Final evaluations of the students revealed their positive appreciation regarding the role of graphic techniques taught for the support in the phases of definition of the problem as well as in the generation of design concepts.
