Abstract

Rationale for the study: Endometriosis and uterine fibroids are hormone-dependent, prevalent pathologies associated with a high socioeconomic cost. The etiology of these pathologies is still unclear. Although there is evidence of studies raising the role of xenoestrogens in its etiopathogenesis, to the date a direct relationship between both entities has not been demonstrated. Objective: To determine the relationship between the total effective xenoestrogen burden (TEXB-a) quantified in omental fat and the presence of fibroids or endometriosis. Furthermore, to study the relationship between the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of the patients and the TEXB-a. Material and methods: A prospective case-control study was performed. The levels of TEXB-a were determined in the omental fat of 74 patients who underwent surgery for fibroids, 21 patients who underwent surgery for endometriosis and 22 women with both pathologies. These were compared with 104 healthy women who underwent surgical procedures for other reasons. Results: Most of the patients in the study presented detectable levels of xenoestrogens. No relationship was found between TEXB-a levels in omental fat and the presence of fibroids or endometriosis. In the group of cases, an association was observed between having a workplace within the Community of Madrid and the xenoestrogenic burden. Patients in the case group who reported current or past use of estrogen-containing hormonal contraceptives also had significatly higher levels of TEXB-a.
