Abstract
Gingival hyperplasia is a frequent side effect of drugs such as phenytoin, cyc/osporine and calcium channel blockers. Although the underlying mechanism is uncertain, the metabolites of such drugs have been suggested to trigger a fibrotic gingival response. Preventive measures including the administration of low drug doses, the use of a/ternative medications and strict control of bacteria[ plaque are on/y partially successful in achieving hyperp/astic regression. We report two cases of extreme gin.g ival hyperplasia in. patients with Bourneville's syndrome associated to con.vulsive crises. In such cases where the medication cannot be in.terrupted, repeat surgical management of the lesions is indi cated. The aún of surgery is not only to resolve the major esthetic problems caused but a/so to prevent possible overinfection and premalignant or even malignant transformation of the lesions.
