Abstract
Cleft lip and palate malformations are craniofacial defects produced by embryological changes in the face formation. It is the most common congenital malformation of the orofacial region, caused by the lack of fusion between facial processes. The multifactorial aethiology of cleft lip and palate is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, however, there are no conclusive studies that help us to determine the causes that lead to this malformation, so we cannot lean on effective procedures to prevent it. It is due to this that treatment of this malformation acquires an important role in the attempt of giving these patients the aesthetic and function they do not have. Orthodontists face a multidisciplinary treatment that includes an important psychological component for patients and relatives apart from the surgical aspects.
