Abstract

Periodontal diagnosis is undergoing important changes in the last few years as a result of the necessary to increase the sensitivity, specificity and productive value of the clinical indicators which we use. Clinical innovations such as electronic probes with consistent and crontolled pressure such as Interprobe, Florida Probe, Toronto Probe, or Foster-Miller Probe, etc. have permited reproducibility in multiple medication. Dental mobility can be measured with with five time grater sensitivity using the Periotest, a device which applies multiple percussion, measuring the cushion capacity of the periodontal ligament. The measurement of temperature which has been demonstrated to be associated with periods of active periodontal destruction is another useful parameter in periodontal diagnosis. Periotemp is based on this principle. Sophisticated radiological techniques based on the use of computerized means of coaptation and information processing will permit us in the future to detect early radiological modifications in the heigh and density of alveolar bone.
