Abstract

Oral history, through the format of ‘life story’ where the narrator tells his/her life story from his/her birth until the present moment of the interview, opens a wide range of possibilities for social scientists. However, the phenomenon of political violence has been treated by these same social scientists in terms of ‘terrorism’ and, therefore, analyses on security and governance had prevailed over historical approaches. The insurgent violence that took place in the Basque Country (ETA) and Ecuador (AVC) during the last quarter of the twentieth century is analysed in this article through the life stories of the protagonists. In this ‘new history’ intersubjectivity (the production of subjectivities that took place during the interview) is already a significant component. Without the necessity of taking a ‘securitisation approach’, the testimonios of ETA and AVC activists reveal contradictions,
