Abstract

This study explores, through the analysis of verbal interaction in the clinical setting between the client and the therapist, whether instructions associated to motivational utterances are followed more often than those that are not. Thirty-eight recorded clinical sessions are d, classifying motivational utterances with the help of a coding system that allows for a detailed study of the specific kind of motivational utterances used and the frequency with which they are used. Results that the therapist most commonly uses those motivational utterances that explicitly state the positive consequences of following the instructions, while those that anticipate aversive consequences are the least used. In addition, in the study sample, instructions were issued associated to motivational utterances were 1.5 times more likely to be followed than those that were not. These results support the idea of motivation in therapy as a verbal process that promotes and facilitates change.
