Abstract

This article presents the actions undertaken at theEscuela de Arquitectura, Ingeniería y Diseño of theUniversidad Europea de Madrid to promote the activeand deep learning of the students inside and outsidethe classroom. This proposal is based on fourelements. The first one is the commitment to studentparticipation. In order to promote it, it will beexplained how student clubs are organized and howthe initiatives related to learning are proposed and ledby the students delegation. The second one is the design of the curriculum itself. In the last approved version of Bachelor's Degree inComputer Engineering, subjects of projects have beenincluded in all the years. The third one has to do with the schedule. In order tomake it easier for students to develop these projects, the hours of the entire degree (and other engineeringrelated programs) have been modified to leave oneday a week free of regulated classes. Thus, thestudents can use their time and the resources of theSchool to progress in their learning outside the formalsessions. The fourth element is space. In addition toconventional classrooms, where activities can bedeveloped both in small or large groups, specificspaces and multidisciplinary laboratories have beendesigned. Students can work, study and meet there tocoordinate activities and projects without theparticipation of a faculty member. This article explains how all these decisions havebeen materialized in a concrete proposal and show thefirst results obtained.
