Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine if differences exist in corporal composition and somatotype between players in a professional soccer team (Spanish First Division League, La Liga BBVA), taking into account minutes played in official competition during the 2012/2013 season. The anthropometric data of 20 professional players was analyzed. The sample group was divided in 2 groups: Group 1 (n=8) ‘starters’ players who played 50% or more of all possible minutes in competition; group 2 (n=12) ‘substitutes’ players that played less than 50% of all minutes in competition. Despite the difference in minutes played, no significant differences were observed between ‘starters’ and ‘substitutes’. This could be due to the fact that specific integrated training sessions are carried out for players who play less in each of the competition microcycles, in order to compensate for the supposed deficit caused by lack of minutes of competition.
