Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis Relojes periféricos en el tracto digestivo del carpín ("Carassius auratus") síntesis circadiana de melatonina y su función en la motilidad intestinal 2010. Supervised by Dr. María Jesús Delgado Saavedra, Dr. Ángel Luis Alonso Gómez.

Elena Velarde is a Professor and researcher at the Department of Physiotherapy. Doctor in Biology from the Complutense University of Madrid. She has worked at the UEM since the 2009-2010 academic year, teaching mainly Physiology and Structure and Function, and also subjects such as Biophysics, Behavioral Biology or Cellular and Tissue Biology. She has also developed her scientific work in other centers such as Emory University (Atlanta) or the CNRS (Strasbourg). Her lines of research are linked to neurosciences, circadian rhythms, metabolism and nutrition. She is the author of 9 articles in specialized magazines indexed in the JCR, as well as a collaborator in 10 book chapters. She has made more than 15 communications and presentations presented at national and international conferences, both scientific and educational. She combines her teaching activity at the European University of Madrid with carrying out research projects both at the UEM itself and in collaboration with the Complutense University of Madrid, as well as with nutritional advice tasks.
