Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis Materia para un espacio Antecedentes y nuevas propuestas 1996. Supervised by Dr. Rodolfo Conesa Bermejo.

Esther Pizarro holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid (1995), where she previously obtained a BA in Fine Arts, specializing in Sculpture (1990). Her research career began with a Predoctoral Fellowship for Research Personnel Training (1991–1994), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, which culminated in her doctoral thesis within the program Space and Sculptural Form. Between 1996 and 1997, she completed a postdoctoral stay in the United States as a Fulbright/MEC Visiting Scholar, consolidating an international profile that has shaped her academic and artistic development. Her training was further enhanced through prestigious competitive grants, including those from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (New York), the Spanish Academy in Rome (1999), the Colegio de España in Paris (1999), and various artistic production grants from the Community of Madrid and the Spanish Ministry of Culture, reinforcing an interdisciplinary approach that connects art, architecture, landscape, and urban space. Since 2003, she has been affiliated with the Universidad Europea de Madrid, where she has served as Associate Professor, Full Professor, and currently Professor (Chair). From 2002 to 2005, she headed the Department of Artistic Creation and Art Theory. She has taught at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, integrating practice-based research methodologies and fostering connections between artistic practice, critical thinking, and technological innovation. From 2020 to 2024, she was a Senior Researcher at the Doctoral School and Research (EDI), and since 2025 she has been affiliated with the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies at the Creative Campus, where she co-directs the research group Creative Ecosystems and BioDesign Lab (EcoBD Lab). She has been awarded four six-year research evaluation periods (sexenios) by ANECA. She has participated as Main Research or team member in numerous competitive national and international R&D projects, as well as in research contracts and knowledge transfer initiatives with public administrations, foundations, and private entities. Her work combines academic research and artistic production, generating outcomes in publications, exhibitions, public space interventions, and science communication activities. Her scientific output includes 70 publications (peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings), disseminated in leading forums in Arts and Humanities, with an interdisciplinary focus on architecture, visual culture, technology, and sustainability. She has contributed to national and international conferences, scientific committees, and doctoral examination boards in Spanish and international universities. As an artist, she has developed an extensive exhibition career with over 225 solo and group exhibitions in national and international museums and art centers, and has created public art interventions in Spain, China, and the Dominican Republic. Her work is included in institutional collections such as the Spanish Academy in Rome, IVAM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Caja Madrid Collection, and she has received several awards and distinctions. Her research and artistic practice focus on the interrelations between art, architecture, landscape, urban space, science, and technology, addressing issues such as data visualization, urban complexity, multispecies ecologies, biomaterials, and sustainability. Her profile integrates research, teaching, artistic practice, and knowledge transfer within a consolidated, interdisciplinary, and internationally oriented trajectory in the field of Arts and Humanities.
