Abstract

Simple hepatic cysts represent one of the most frequent liver lesions. They are usually asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally in radiological tests performed for other reasons. Complications of this type of lesions are infrequent, with intracystic hemorrhage and infection being the most frequent. Exceptionally, cases of spontaneous rupture of simple non-parasitic liver cyst have been described. We present three patients with spontaneous rupture of simple non-parasitic liver cyst, where the presence or absence of acute abdomen conditioned their management and the decision of conservative versus surgical attitude. There is no standardized treatment for the management of this complication, with conservative management being a viable option in patients without evidence of peritonitis on abdominal examination. Otherwise, the option of urgent surgery is posed in the presence of acute abdomen.
