Abstract

A partial overdenture uses natural teeth and roots to support and retain the thickness of the bone, similar to a partial denture the only difference being that the prosthetic base covers one or more retained roots. Keeping teeth as part of the residual border contributes to reduce its reabsorption speed maintaining at the same time the propioceptor impulses, which allows to pressure the directional discrimination, the tactile sensitiveness to outside pressure and thickness differenciation and consistency of food, almost as in those patients with their own teeth; that is why patients get used to these dentures easier. Keeping the alveolar bone also produces less trauma to the remaining tissues, increasing the support, retention and the stability of the denture. Partial overdentures are fast and conservative answers for patients with congenital and acquired problems, and are also used in many cases as transitory dentures. Howevver, periodontal disease and cavities are the main problems caused by the use of this type of dentures. Keeping the support, as well as the roots of natural teeth depends mainly on how motivated and skilled a patient is to be able to keep up a high standard of bucal hygiene.
