Abstract

Research on indirect free kicks is infrequent in the field of football analysis, and although the tactical analysis of Chinese football has increased in recent years, there is still a lack of study of set pieces. For this reason, the objectives of this study were: i) To describe the casuistry of corner kicks and indirect free kicks. ii) To find out which are the criteria that modify the result, and iii) To discover the interaction of criteria that provide a higher probability of success. Based on the observational methodology, 160 matches of the 2020 Chinese Super League were analyzed. To meet the objectives, two types of analysis were carried out: a bivariate one using contingency tables and a multivariate one using a predictive decision tree model. Several criteria were found to significantly influence the outcome of corner kicks and indirect free kicks. At the multivariate level, two decision tree models were developed. In the case of corner kicks, it was observed that the highest probability of success occurred when 3-4 players were involved in the attack and the ball was sent to the opponent's area by aerial trajectory. In the case of indirect free kicks, the highest probability also occurred when 3-4 players took part in the set piece action. These results can be useful when proposing strategies for the execution of set pieces.
