Résumé

The term «palpitations» includes the patient's perception of their heartbeat. It is one of the most common causes for consultation for both primary care physicians and cardiologists. Its diagnosis requires a full, thorough protocol which should begin with clearly defining what the palpitations are like; how the patient perceives them; what circumstances they are associated with; their distribution in time; and if they are associated with other symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, or syncope. Once evaluated, the pertinent examinations must be performed to determine their origin, which is not always cardiologic. Obtaining an electrocardiographic recording when the patient is experiencing palpitations is fundamental, as this can avoid the need to use other, more complex diagnostic methods. Treatment should be focused not just on controlling or preventing palpitations, but rather on determining the cardiac or organic cause that may trigger them.
