Abstract

An initial ethno-botanical and ethnological survey was carried out in Maragatería Alta, a small region in the northwest of Leon province. In all, we collected data for 139 taxa (85 wild plants and 44 allochthonous or cultivated) of vascular plants used traditionally, with their local vernacular names and their uses and applications both nowadays and in the past. Most of this knowledge is disappearing. What stands out is the huge importance of some wild and cultivated species to survival, for example the oak, rye and tree heather (Erica spp.), which were used in their entirety.
