Resumo
The aim of our study was to propose a method for sex determination from the metatarsal of the hallux in cases in which other useful bones as the pelvic and cranial bones may be unavailable. We recorded 22 linear measurements and 5 angles of the metatarsal bone of the big toe in 47 amputated lower limbs. The subject demographics and pathological conditions were known by clinical history. By means of the univariate analysis we could detect statistically significant differences of means for 19 linear measurements, finding higher values in males, and 1 angle (higher in females). Using Fisher's stepwise discriminant analysis we obtained an optimal discriminant function which, with only 3 linear variables, correctly identified sex for 89,4% either in matrix or jackknife classifications.
