Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century Madrid was involved in an important transformation process that would turn it several decades later into a great metropolis. In 1919, Compañía Metropolitano Alfonso XIII managed to materialize the idea of a new type of transport that ran below the street level. And although it had already been successfully tested in other European cities, the expectation that emerged in the capital was exceeded. This is a fascinating story of our own history in which engineering and architecture go hand in hand. Without the subway, the city would be a very different one. As Francisco Azorín already said: Madrid y el Metro caminan juntos.
