Abstract

The main international organizations determine the urban transport policy worldwide. In this paper, we show the urban transport policies proposed by the most influential international organizations: European Conference of Ministers of Transports (E.C.M.T)- International Transport Forum (I.T.F.), European Commission, World Bank and International Association of Public Transport (U.I.T.P.). We present the guidelines of the policies proposed by these institutions, and its impact in the urban transport policy put into practice in many cities of the World. Right after, we assess the main characteristics of the urban transport policies proposed by these organizations -like sustainability or to prefer public transport to private transport- and its high level of interventionism; finally, we propose a development framework of the urban transports focused on the freedom to choose of the citizens.
