Abstract

The assessment of osteoporosis risk factors has a growing role in the screening and in the identification of patients with high risk of osteopenia or osteoporotic fractures. On the other hand, the recent recommendations for the management of osteoporosis –and thus, for the selection of therapy– are based not only on the measurement of bone mineral density but on the detection of clinical risk factors. In the present article, major clinical risk factors and clinical decision rules for the detection of low bone mineral density and osteoporotic fracture are reviewed. Nevertheless, any clinical decision rules has to be locally validated before its wide application.
