Abstract

Introduction: Scientific literature has reported numerous systemic and orofacial sequelae resulting from premature birth, including delayed dental development in these patients. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the potential delay in dental development in premature patients using Demirjian's method. Materials and Methods: A sample of 14 4 to 19-year-old premature patients from the Faculty of Dentistry at Complutense University of Madrid, who had previously undergone panoramic radiography, was studied. Dental age was calculated using Demirjian's method and compared with chronological age at the time of orthopantomography. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 25.0, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U tests, and Spearman's correlation coefficient, with a 95% significance level. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between chronological age and dental age according to Demirjian's method in the studied sample. Additionally, no relationship was observed between dental development and variables such as gender or gestational age. Conclusions: The results indicate that premature patients do not exhibit delayed dental development. Demirjian's method is applicable to this population. No relationship was found with gestational age or gender. Further studies with larger samples are needed.
