Abstract

In this text I propose a critical approach to the images of the Earth from space through practices happening in a non-planetary scale. In this regard, this paper deals with early timelapses depicting plant growth carried on separately by vegetal physiologist Wilhelm Pfeffer and botanist and film pioneer Henderina V. Scott. Examined in relation to the material culture of their laboratories, the production of these moving images evidences the presence of a mechanical time which, beyond registering vegetal growth, produces and modifiesit. In these contexts the image appears as an expression of a temporality that transforms the planet. This terraforming time is explicity set up in an installation part of this research, The Quivering of the Redd, where the mechanism of planetary image is opened to display a rotating commodified world inside.
